Dear teachers, classmates, ladies and gentlemen:
I am Jen, a medical student from 8-year program. It is my honor here, to share you my thoughts about doctor and Xiangya Hospital. My topic today is 'Doctors, to be or not to be?'.
Weeks ago, a post-graduate was killed by a patient in the affiliated hospital of Harbin Medical University just because of refusing to proscribe what he demanded due to taboo of his present illness. I was extremely sorry and angry for the issue. To my surprise, 60% of the net-citizens felt happy for it.It aroused judgment about my choice of major. I started to ask myself, what is a doctor 's career and why I should strive for it?
Some people say, doctor is a sacred angel-like job to save people. Some complain about giving too many drugs and too little care by doctos. According to the research, a doctor undertakes the same or higher risk of a pilot, while receives much less income and understanding. Indeed, as with the alternation of the disease spectrum and technology, a doctor faces more challenge than ever. A doctor needs to take several thoughts about the diagnosis and treatment, at the same time, keep up with the development of new method.
It is a shame, that society does not understand doctors and tolerate flaws of doctors. Laws and legislations are not fair and complete enough, giving rise to hospital violators. Media craves for medical malpractice and often exaggerates it. Distrust of patients burdens the daily work of doctors. In order to avoid dispute, doctors are obliged to write agreement letters to prove consent of patients and their relatives. There is even a saying, want money, take a surgery. I wondered, where has the nice doctor gone?
Just like other medical students, my adoration of doctors starts from Bethune. His story of self-devotion shows me the most precious thing people share--love. It removes estrangement and trauma of people in different races and countries during the war. From my perspective, there can be thousands of reasons not to be a doctor, but spreading the seeds of love can be the only reason to be a doctor.
But this is not the entire definition of a doctor. I began to make sense of doctor after I entered Xiangya school of medicine. I was born in Xiangya Hospital, grew up in its family area, and enrolled in Xiangya School of Medicine. For patients, Xiangya is a harbor for hope and healing. For medical students, Xiangya is paradise for study. For me, Xiangya is home for inner peace. It teaches me the tradition of Xiangya Hospital. Preciseness, pragmatism, innovation and integrity. The tradition is seen in everywhere, ward and out-patient. It is a 紐帶in every person, doctors, nurses and logistics department.
Xiangya also teaches me the essence of being a doctor. I forgot how many times I worked overtime, but I did not forget the grateful lookings of patients I have helped. As a medical student, I spend most of my spare time in hospital to improve my skill, but the most important thing I have gained is delight and respect from others' well-being.
A teacher once told me, a good doctor not only heals the patient, but also heals the world. I believe this faith is deeply rooted in every doctor's mind. Zhong Nanshan, is my role model for leading people during prevalence of SARS. His words and decisions are like an oasis in a desert for people at loss. There are also many hard-working doctors in Xiangya engaged in both work and scientific research. When I ask them what keeps them sleep only 6 or less hours everyday, they tell me, they want to challenge themselves and meanwhile, help more people by digging out the source and growth of diseases. Whenever I feel tired of time-costing paper writing, I think of them and find my source of power again.
In conclusion, being a doctor is not only a time of life, it is a state of mind. It is persistent willingness and happiness to propagate love, to receive patients' respect and to improve oneself via hard work. Therefore, why don't we carry on to be a life-long angel? Why don't we promise Xiangya that we will create a better world of healing patients and the world? Thank you!
